It’s quiet – the FFAD7033R1 has two things to solve because it produces as little noise as possible. First, it does not produce any audible compressor noise. Why can you trust our advice?

So far, we have personally tested more than 50 different dehumidifiers. Many other reviewers make recommendations based on the manufacturer’s specifications. These specifications list performance data based on tests conducted in a highly controlled environment (ie, moisture removal rate and noise output) that maximizes the performance of the dehumidifier and achieves the desired results. Our tests simulate real-world environments and conditions, and these are not always the ideal choices to determine the actual effect of each dehumidifier we tested in the real world. We rigorously test each unit to determine how fast it removes moisture, how much noise is generated, how much energy is used, and the accuracy of the hygrometer’s built-in hygrometer (for reading humidity levels) is actually in a typical home environment. . This means that our test data is usually completely different from the data in the manufacturer’s instructions.

There are three main types – dehumidifiers

  • Thermoelectric dehumidifier
  • Desiccant dehumidifier
  • Compressor based dehumidifier

Dehumidifier type

Compressor based full size dehumidifiers (such as those in the above figures) are capable of removing more than 10 gallons of water per day from the air. Most thermoelectric and desiccant devices remove only a few ounces per day.

At any humidity, compressor-based equipment can be used to dehumidify any (reasonable) size space. Most thermoelectric and drying units can only be used to dehumidify small spaces (eg closets) and can only be used if the humidity level of the space is not too high.

Because in most cases, thermoelectric and desiccant devices are not suitable for most people at all, we won’t discuss them in this guide (for information on these dehumidifiers, see our Thermoelectric and Dehumidifier Dehumidifier Guide).

Instead, our focus in this guide will be on dehumidifiers based on full-size compressors – the only dehumidifier that meets most people’s needs in most cases. This is also the type of dehumidifier that most people traditionally consider when they hear the word “dehumidifier.”

Key steps before purchasing a dehumidifier

For a while, we will first find our top dehumidifier selection (the advice of our best dehumidifier), but before we do it, we need to first review a very important concept – the ability of the dehumidifier.

A clear understanding of this concept is absolutely critical to determining which type of dehumidifier you need to purchase.

Note: Even though the concept of dehumidifier capacity is not new to you, we ask that you contact us in the next section of this guide because we will explain our view of the concept (and how to apply it) Choosing a specific dehumidifier model is quite different from most other consumer product publications.

As we mentioned earlier, compressor-based dehumidifiers can remove more than 10 gallons of water per day from the air. But not all of them can remove the entire 10 gallons. Some people can only remove about 6 gallons per day, while others can only remove 4 gallons per day.

How much water (moisture) the dehumidifier removes from the air every day is called the capacity of the dehumidifier. Therefore, a dehumidifier that can remove 10 gallons of water per day from the air is said to have a capacity of 10 gallons. Or what?

Dehumidifier manufacturers do not use gallons to specify the capacity of their dehumidifiers. Its volume is too loud. Instead, they use pints. Of course, a type of off is only one-eighth of a gallon.

Therefore, the dehumidifier we talked about with a capacity of up to 10 gallons per day is referred to as the 70-type dehumidifier. Type 70 is actually a little less than 10 gallons. Specifically, it is equal to 8.75 gallons.

The Type 70 dehumidifier is the most common compressor dehumidifier, followed by a Type 50 dehumidifier (type 50 off = 6.25 gallons) and a Type 30 dehumidifier (type 30 off = 3.75 gallons). There are also some dehumidifiers on the market that deviate from these general capacity standards. For example, it is not uncommon for a dehumidifier to have a nominal moisture consumption of 32, 45 or 65 pints per day.

Which capacity dehumidifier should you buy?

In most other Dehumidifier Buyer’s Guides, the author of the guide will indicate your size chart to help you determine the capacity of the dehumidifier you need to purchase. The most popular size chart is given by the Household Appliance Manufacturers Association AHAM.

AHAM tests and verifies the dehumidification rate and energy efficiency of most dehumidifiers in the United States (please note that they did not actually check and compare the dehumidifiers, they just verified the manufacturer’s instructions). Because they conduct such testing and verification, they are considered the authority of the dehumidifier.

Therefore, most consumer publications do not hesitate to quote their size sheets. The AHAM chart we are discussing is reproduced in the table below.

To use this chart, please follow these steps:

  • Choose the humidity of the space you need to dehumidify
  • Select the square foot of the space
  • Match the selected wet line to the selected square foot bar – this gives the recommended capacity of the dehumidifier to purchase

For example, suppose your bathroom is very large, 1000 square feet – the chart suggests you buy a 17 dehumidifier.

Unlike most other consumer product publications, we do not recommend using the chart above to help you determine which capacity dehumidifier to purchase.

Why do we not agree to use this chart? See the 8 reasons below:

1.The chart cannot be found anywhere on the AHAM official website or the AHAM official test specification website. Although many different consumer publications refer to the above chart and the source code as AHAM, the fact that AHAM is indeed source code cannot be verified because the chart is not actually present because it has been copied from the same publication. Place on any AHAM website.

Update: Recently, readers have told us that the AHAM website actually has this chart. The chart can be found at the bottom of the PDF file. While the existence of this map on the AHAM website does eliminate the first reason we disagree with its use, it certainly does not eliminate the other seven reasons listed below. Read on to find out why we still don’t recommend AHAM’s official size chart.

2.There are only two of the capabilities listed in the chart – 32 of the second and third rows and 30 of the bottom row – corresponding to the actual capacity of the dehumidifier you can purchase in the store. Read the first row of the form, no 10, 14, 18, 22 or 26 dehumidifiers can be purchased online or at any location in the store.

3.The chart has a limited range, starting at 500 square feet and ending at 2500 square feet. What if you need less than 500 square feet of dehumidification? If it is greater than 2,500 square feet? The chart failed to make recommendations for space beyond the given range.

4.The chart does not take into account the height of the space that needs to be dehumidified. Rooms with higher ceilings have more air than rooms with lower ceilings – the chart above does not take this into account. The recommendation based on volume (measured in cubic feet) is more appropriate than the space area that requires dehumidification.

5.The chart does not consider the CFM of the dehumidifier CFM – the dehumidifier intake fan (the cubic feet of air that the fan enters the dehumidifier every minute). We evaluated dehumidifiers with higher CFM fans much higher than dehumidifiers with lower CFM fans. why? Because only half of the drying process of dehumidifying a certain volume of air involves the process of actually removing moisture from the interior of the dehumidifier. The other half involves drawing air into the dehumidifier to dehumidify it. Higher CFM fans can draw more air from a greater distance around the dehumidifier. This is especially important if you want to dehumidify large spaces. The above chart does not take into account that a small capacity dehumidifier with a higher CFM fan may outperform a larger capacity dehumidifier with a lower CFM fan in some cases.

6.The chart is likely to be extrapolated based on test data obtained in a highly controlled environment. This may not be recommended for experiments in actual environments based on actual conditions (moderately humid, very humid, humid, very humid).

How do dehumidifier manufacturers claim that their Type 70 dehumidifier can actually remove Type 70 dehydration points every day? The manufacturer voluntarily sends it to AHAM for testing. AHAM then measures the dehumidification rate of the dehumidifier in the laboratory, which is set to exactly 60% of relative humidity (RH) and 80oF.

We think it’s certain that AHAM didn’t actually do any testing under the “wet” or “very wet” conditions mentioned in its size chart. For example, they are less likely to be tested in a room with wall or floor sweat (a room classified as “wet” in the chart) or in a room where clothes are dry (the room will be classified as “very wet” in the picture) . The bottom line here is that the chart is likely to be based on data obtained in a space that is very different from the space that actually needs to be dehumidified.

7.This figure contradicts the manufacturer’s recommendations.See, for example, the Friedrich Dehumidifier manual. It is recommended to use a Type 70 dehumidifier in a 1000 to 2000 square foot “wet” or “very wet” space, which is exactly the same as the recommended size for the 37 pints of the above size chart in the same size space.

8.This figure contradicts our own research and testing.For example, the chart suggests using a 44 pint dehumidifier in a 2,500 square foot “very wet” space. Our experience with all dehumidifiers tested to date has led us to believe that a 44 pint dehumidifier (which does not actually exist, but not in the sense of the problem) has little enough capacity to remove the wet Large space under these conditions.

Dehumidifier – our advice

Obviously, we think there are many defects in the AHAM dehumidifier size chart. And, because of this, we strongly recommend that you do not use it to determine which size dehumidifier you should purchase. So what do we recommend? Our advice is just the following:

Buy a dehumidifier that you can afford for maximum capacity.

In other words, we recommend that you purchase a Type 70 Dehumidifier, the largest capacity consumer dehumidifier you can purchase, no matter what size or humidity you need to dehumidify.

If you have a small, not too wet space – for example, if you live in an apartment of about 1000 square feet – you can definitely use the 50 or off 30 models. However, you will pay the price. What is the cost of this? We explain below.

Why do you recommend it to your dehumidifier?

We recommend that you purchase the maximum capacity (for the consumer, this means the 70-type off), and you can afford the dehumidifier based on the following very simple facts:

Type 70 dehumidifiers are faster than 50 or 30 models

This may sound like it was obvious in our statement here, but I really thought of this statement – a Type 70 dehumidifier dehumidified faster.
It is easy to correlate the capacity of the Type 70 dehumidifier with a certain amount of water – the amount of water that the dehumidifier removes from the air every day. The truth is that such a connection is not correct. The Type 70 Dehumidifier is of course capable of removing a large amount of Type 70 dewatered water from humid air every day.

However, more importantly, the capacity of the dehumidifier is related to the speed of dehumidification. The Model 70 Dehumidifier removes any given amount of moisture at a faster rate in any given time, not just the 70-type – not just 24 hours.

If this sounds confusing, then think about it. A pint 70 type was removed and the 70 type dehydration points were removed every day. This is equivalent to removing 2.92 pints of water per hour. The Type 50 dehumidifier removes 2.08 pints per hour, and the Type 30 dehumidifier removes 1.25 pints per hour. Suppose you have a space to hold an air block containing a type 100 dehydration point. Below is the speed at which each size/capacity dehumidifier can remove moisture.

Type 70 – 34.25 hours

Type 50 – 48.08 hours

Type 30 – 80 hours

Obviously, if you set a certain amount of water, the 70-type dehumidifier can remove water faster than a small-capacity dehumidifier.

Another way to look at it is the percentage:

To remove any given amount of moisture from any given space, the Type 70 Dehumidifier will be able to remove moisture by 40% faster than a Type 50 dehumidifier. Compared with the 30 dehumidifier? Speed ​​up to 134%!

Due to its faster dehumidification speed, the Type 70 dehumidifier requires less time to run than a small capacity dehumidifier to dehumidify any size space under any circumstances.

The very important reasons are as follows, which is why we strongly recommend the 70 model so strongly:

It makes the Type 70 dehumidifier more energy efficient than a small capacity unit.Type 70 dehumidifiers draw more energy per unit time than small capacity units, but they absorb this energy in less time. You see, every minute your dehumidifier runs, it puts pressure on its internal components (compressors, condensers, etc.). Since the Type 70 dehumidifier runs shorter than a small capacity device to dehumidify any given amount of air, the stress on its internal components takes much less time. This makes them last much longer than small capacity units.

Think about it this way: The life of a dehumidifier doesn’t depend on how long you have it, but how many hours you use it. Mathematics is simple. Units with smaller capacity have much longer run times than large units, so that the same space can be dehumidified at the same humidity.

We have investigated countless consumer reviews of hundreds of different dehumidifiers of different sizes. In fact, surprisingly, how much is the number of consumer complaints about the smaller capacity units (50 and especially the 30-type off) compared to the number of complaints from the larger capacity (70-type off-unit) difference. For units with smaller capacity, the percentage of complaints is much higher.
